With the closing of the first round of recruitment for settlers on Mars, Mars One has received over 200,000 registrations of interest from some 140 countries. Of course, once the analysis of these registrants commences, only a small number will enter the pool of serious applicants who have fulfilled all the requirements for this unique chance to become a member of the first team of humans to land on Mars.
Three additional rounds of selection will follow, further narrowing down this large pool to a smaller select set of teams who are scheduled to start their training in 2015. The second round of the selection process will commence early in 2014, where those whose applications have passed muster will be interviewed in person by the selection committee. Aspiring Martians will still have another chance – albeit no longer as part of the first group of settlers. A regular recruitment programme will be set up shortly so that those who missed the first round will still have a chance in the future.
